Life tends to grow as the environment allows. As natural problem solvers, humans seek environments and experiences that create challenges. In very young children, growth is dependent upon stability and reliability – trust grows in a nurturing environment; mistrust grows in a lacking one. As children develop greater control over the physical body, they develop a sense of autonomy and begin to assert power to direct their efforts and define their roles. Successful accomplishment of exerting personal power over challenges and obstacles leads to a sense of purpose. And purpose creates drive.
