How Do You Think? Do you think mechanically or critically?
One little word can change your perspective.
To re-track mechanical thinking to critical thinking Use the word “YET”. When he says, “I’m not good at math,” you add the word “yet.” And then ask, “I wonder how you will increase your understanding?”
This teaches a growth mindset (critical) over a fixed (mechanical) mindset. Meaning: things are not static but ever-changing. “It may not be the case today, but it can be tomorrow.” or “It may be the case today, but not tomorrow.”
